John Coleman (footballer, born 1881)

John Coleman was an English professional footballer who played as a forward for Northampton Town, Woolwich Arsenal, Everton, Sunderland, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Tunbridge Wells Rangers.
Coleman started as a non-league player with Northampton Town before joining Woolwich Arsenal in 1902. Coleman scored 17 goals in his first season in London, and was the club's top scorer. He scored 23 goals the following season, as Arsenal won promotion to the First Division. Two seasons later he scored 15 goals and reached the semi-finals of the 1905-06 FA Cup. He made his sole appearance for England the following season, in a game against Ireland.
Woolwich Arsenal experienced financial difficulties and Coleman was sold to Everton, for a fee of £700, in February 1908.〔 He went on to play for the Merseyside club for two and a half years, maintaining membership of the Players’ Union against the wishes of The FA. Coleman left Everton in 1910, after scoring 30 goals in 71 appearances. He joined Sunderland, where he scored 21 goals in 33 appearances in his single season at Roker Park, before transferring to join Fulham in June 1911.
